Following Journal Black, the next chapter in the series was Open Journal, a group exhibition centred on representation and social awareness. Where the previous show responded to a moment of global unrest, Open Journal widened the conversation and invited artists working across a range of mediums to reflect on how art can document society, identity, and the world around us.
Delivered in collaboration with Lewisham Council as part of the Borough of Culture programme, the exhibition marked a proud moment for Elements Bar as it celebrated its four year anniversary. Being part of Lewisham’s campaign to become the London Borough of Culture placed the exhibition within a wider civic movement that recognised the power of local creative communities.
Artists were invited to respond freely to the theme, resulting in a diverse collection of work spanning painting, photography, mixed media, and installation. Each piece acted as an open page, offering perspectives on visibility, community, lived experience, and the role of art in raising social awareness.
Over the course of the month, Open Journal welcomed more than 400 visitors into the space, continuing the commitment to making exhibitions accessible, relevant, and rooted in the local community. The exhibition demonstrated how Elements Bar could operate not only as a venue, but as an active cultural hub contributing to borough wide creative initiatives.
